Henze's visceral score is a cry for freedom that transcends time and place—and a linchpin in Julia Bullock's vision for her season as Artist in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 4 Musicians Chart 100 Years in the Life of a Runaway Slave - The New York Times “spellbinding…a true ensemble performance” - Financial Times “a searing portrait of a man sizing up slavery in all forms” - Musical America photos Stephanie Berger</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - In Past Pupils and Smiles (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>In Past Pupils and Smiles was performed on November 24, 2019, as the finale to the 58th Biennale di Venezia, in the Teatro alle Tese 2, Arsenale. Solange pursues an engagement with Black speculative thought by virtue of world-making. ”In Past Pupils & Smiles” meditates on the interrelations between aesthetics of the Self, the body and constructions of spatiality. We construct ourselves in relation to the spaces we imagine. It is by creating immersive landscapes that the artist expounds on Black womanhood. By reaching traditions of postmodern dance, minimalism, architecture and queer/feminist narratives; an interconnection with unrestrained presence and expression is conceived. The production was commissioned by Arts Council of England as part of Meetings on Art, the festival’s official public program, co-produced by the Delfina Foundation at the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - Robin Hood: A Beast Ballad (2025)</image:title>
<image:caption>For centuries, the legendary Robin Hood – the King of Thieves – and his mottled troupe of robbers have emerged from the forest wherever injustice has occurred, and have fought on the side of the weak and the oppressed. In times of corruption and avarice, he stands up to the authorities and distributes the spoils from his robberies among the poor. American director Wu Tsang, the group Moved by the Motion and author Sophia-Al-Maria are returning with a new reading of this story from the olden times: Robin Hood, a visually expressive and fantastical experience for children and adults that examines the political question of when theft can be just. Robin Hood is a story about the utopia of living together with each other and with nature in a just and respectful manner. It is a celebration of friendship and love – and it shows that we can fight for an alternative to our current ways of life. artistic direction Moved by the Motion (Wu Tsang, Tosh Basco, Asma Maroof, Josh Johnson) direction Wu Tsang movement direction Tosh Basco choreography Josh Johnson music Asma Maroof text Sophia Al-Maria stage design Nina Mader & Carlos Soto costume design Carlos Soto dramaturgy Joshua Wicke Production Schauspielhaus Zürich with the support of Stiftung Pro Helvetia, Schweizer Kulturstiftung / world premiere April 2025, Schauspielhaus Zürich photos Inès Manai</image:caption>

<image:caption>A single gesture that can loop infinitely. A person lies supine on a bed straddled by another person who repeatedly and slowly beats him over the head with a microphone. The amplifier is hidden behind the pillow so that the blow of the microphone creates a deafening bang followed by a sustained feedback. Periodically, Bach’s Variation 25 from Glenn Gould’s 1955 recording of The Well-Tempered Clavier plays softly.</image:caption>
